Ultra Flash Prep
EOS 4.0 through 4.10 users need to load Ultra Prep to enable your sampler to read compressed files. EOS 4.5 users need only to install EOS 4.6. All users should download the updated RFX manual or the EOS 4.6 Software Addendum for information on EOS 4.6. Steps for Installing The Operating System: Macintosh users
In order to install a new operating system (in this case, EOS 4.61) in your E4XT Ultra, you will need to follow these steps:
- Print out a copy of these instructions.
- Back up your current operating system by inserting a floppy disk into the diskette drive of your E4XT Ultra and pressing the following buttons on your sampler in order: Disk/Browser/Utilities/Copy Sys. Once your current operating system has been backed up, remove the floppy disk and put it aside in a safe place.
- Click here to download a disk image of EOS 4.61 Ultra for Macintosh. Use Stuffit Expander (available here) to decompress the disk image file (the resulting disk image will be named eos_v461.img).
Note: Some users have reported receiving a "Shrink Wrap Error" message when the disk image self-extracting archive completes its decompression process. This in no way affects the performance of the EOS 4.61 Upgrade installation routine. Just click "OK" and proceed to use Disk Copy as described below to create the floppy of the disk image.
- Obtain a copy of Disk Copy. Download the MacBinary version of Disk Copy 6.3.3.smi.bin from Apple's website under "Utilities Software Downloads."
- If the file does not decompress automatically after it is downloaded, use Stuffit Expander to decompress it.
- Once the file is decompressed, you will be left with two files (most likely on your desktop) - the original Disk Copy 6.3.3.smi bin (which you can now delete) and Disk Copy 6.3.3.smi
- Double click on the Disk Copy 6.3.3.smi icon which will then decompress into a folder on your desktop, simply called Disk Copy (its icon will not look like a normal folder, however). You may then delete Disk Copy 6.3.3.smi.
- Double click on the Disk Copy folder. Within this folder you will find a program icon labelled Disk Copy. Click on this icon to start the program.
- The Disk Copy window which comes up will initally have three parameters (Image Name, Volume Name, and Checksum) in the upper half of the window and a set of instructions in the lower window: "To mount a disk image, drag it to this window or select 'Mount Image' from the Image menu. Once an image is mounted, you can work with it as you would any disk on the desktop."
IMPORTANT: Ignore those directions!
- Instead, choose the "Make A Floppy...." option from the Utilities menu of Disk Copy.
- Choose the disk image you earlier downloaded and decompressed (eos_v461.img) and click the "Choose" button.
- The disk image will be loaded and then you will see a message which says "Making floppy from image file 'eos_v461.img'... Please insert a high-density floppy."
- Insert the floppy (not the diskette on which you have already backed up your current operating system!) in your diskette drive and the disk imaging process will begin. The floppy will eject when the process is finished.
- Make sure your E4XT Ultra is turned off. Insert the floppy disk into the E4XT Ultra diskette drive and turn your unit on. The splash screen should now reference EOS 4.6. Follow the on-screen instructions, and the operating system should be installed.

Steps for the Operating System: PC users
In order to install EOS 4.61 Ultra, you will need to follow these steps:
- Print out a copy of these instructions.
- Back up your current operating system by inserting a floppy disk into the diskette drive of your sampler and pressing the following buttons on your sampler in order: Disk/ Browser/ Utilities/ Copy Sys. Once your current operating system has been backed up, remove the floppy disk and put it aside in a safe place.
- Click here to download a disk image of EOS 4.61 Ultra for PC. Place the EOS 4.61 Ultra disk image file in an empty directory on your hard drive (please remember where you place the file - you will need to know a bit later in the process).
- Click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of your Windows screen. Drag your cursor up to the "Run...." item and click once. This will open a dialog box appropriately titled "Run." Click on the Browse button. This will open up a dialog box entitled "Browse."
- Using the "Look In:" drag-down box, find the directory where you earlier placed the EOS 4.61 Ultra disk image file (called EOS_V461.EXE). Double click on the EOS_V461.EXE file. This will return you to the "Run" dialog box with the path to the EOS 4.61 Ultra disk image file now appearing in the "Open:" field. Click on the OK button. This will begin a DOS session in a separate window which will ask you this question: "Drive where to Restore Image:"
- Press the "a" key on your keyboard, where "a" is the letter of your disk drive. The EOS 4.61 Ultra disk image will automatically be transferred to the blank diskette in your disk drive. When this process finishes, please eject the new EOS 4.6 Ultra disk you have just created and set it aside.
- Make sure your sampler is turned off. Insert the floppy disk into the sampler diskette drive and turn your unit on. The splash screen should now reference EOS 4.61. Follow the on-screen instructions, and the operating system should be installed.
